The effect of hurricane Katrina to the members of Flotilla 33 was devastating to the degree that, after a year has passed, it is not possible to retain the Flotilla organization. The following note was recently sent by the VFC, Wally Weakley, officially disbanding the 34 year-old Flotilla. This web site will close December 31, 2006.

To Members of FL-33-
As you know, FL-33 is being disbanded.  It is with much regret and sorrow that this action is being taken.  However, there do not appear to be any alternatives.  Several members want to transfer to other flotillas or to 10-10 (inactive).  For your benefit, I am forwarding the transfer forms as an attachment.  The dues for 10-10 are$22.00 ($12.00 for National and $10.00 for District.  Please complete the transfer form and forward them to me with a check for $22.00 and I will sign them as FC and forward the forms and checks on to Bob Burton.  If you have any auxiliary issued equipment to return, make arrangements to get the equipment to me and I will turn it over to the Division materials officer.  We want to get the paperwork on the transfers or resignations done by 1 December.  I would like to make arrangements to turn the equipment over to the division by 15 December.

A Cup of Joe

Josephus Daniels (18 May 1862-15 January 1948) was appointed Secretary of the Navy by President Woodrow Wilson in 1913. Among his reforms of the Navy were inaugurating the practice of making 100 Sailors from the Fleet eligible for entrance into the Naval Academy, the introduction of women into the service, and the abolishment of the officers' wine mess. From that time on, the strongest drink aboard Navy ships could only be coffee and over the years, a cup of coffee became known as "a cup of Joe".

Flotilla History and Background

Flotilla 33 was established in May 1972 and currently has 27 members who reside in the general area of Bay St. Louis, Waveland, Diamondhead and Pass Christian, Mississippi. Our members actively participate in the functions that form the four cornerstones of the Auxiliary. These are -Service to its Members, Recreational Boating Safety, Coast Guard and State Support Services and Fellowship. Many of these activities involve working directly with active members of the U. S. Coast Guard at Station Gulfport as well as with the general public.

The area of responsibility for Station Gulfport extends roughly from Pearl River on the west throughout the Mississippi Sound in the Gulf of Mexico to Pascagoula, Mississippi on the east. Included in this area are Pearl River, Jordan River, Bay St. Louis, and Biloxi Bay. Flotilla 33 operates mostly in the area from the Pearl River to Biloxi Bay, including Bay St. Louis and the Jordan River.

The Flotilla meets monthly in Bay St. Louis, at 1900hrs (7:00PM) on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Guests and prospective members are welcomed to attend. For directions to the meeting room or further information of flotilla activities, please e mail your request to either the Flotilla Commander or Vice Flotilla Commander.
